Wilmington (52) Vs. Greenville (42)
Jan 15, 2011
Wilmington paced itself in its 52-42 District 10, Region 2-AA opener, and the move paid off.
The upstart Greyhounds dominated the final quarter, outscoring Greenville, 23-8, to erase a five-point, fourth-quarter deficit.
Wilmington coach Mike Jeckavitch said he rotated players in and out of the game to try and make sure the Greyhounds remained energized.
“We really stepped it up on the defensive end of the floor,” he said. “I was trying to keep kids fresh throughout the game, and by the time the fourth quarter started, the rotation we were working with still had fresh legs. We got a couple turnovers and we got some nice transition points out of it. We just got after it in the fourth quarter.”
Anthony Derrick scored 10 of his 11 points in the final stanza to ignite Wilmington (1-0, 5-6). He also handed out four assists.
“That created a lot of opportunities for the other guys,” Jeckavitch said.
Darryl Pace recorded a double-double for the Greyhounds with 15 rebounds and 11 points.
Garrett Blaschak registered 13 points to lead the Trojans (0-1, 4-7).
