Ellwood topples Laurel
Ellwood City (52) Vs. Laurel (40)
Jan 08, 2011
Brandon Lucarelli found his shooting touch at just the right time for Ellwood City Lincoln last night.
The junior scored a career-high 29 points in a 52-40 WPIAL Section 2-AA boys basketball victory over Laurel. Lucarelli netted 14 in a game-changing fourth quarter for the Wolverines (3-1 section, 6-4 overall).
Ellwood City led by three entering the final frame, and outscored the Spartans, 20-11, to seal the victory. Laurel coach Mike Tinstman said it wasn’t just Lucarelli’s heroics that hurt Laurel (1-2, 3-8).
“We were up, 27-20, in the third and they scored and started to pressure us (on defense),” he said. “We had three or four turnovers in a row, and it really turned things around in a hurry.”
Lucarelli stepped up in the absence of Ryan Horgan, who didn’t play because of an injured ankle. Lucarelli made six of Ellwood City’s seven 3-pointers. He carried the Wolverines during a game where no other Ellwood City player hit double figures.
Chad Long scored 15 and dished out five assists for Laurel, which played without Todd Fennick, who also was out with an injured ankle.
