Jan 07, 2011
Free throws and clutch shooting down the stretch propelled Neshannock to a Section 2-AA victory over Riverside.
Chelsea Kauffman buried a 3-pointer with just under a minute left to put the Lady Lancers (3-0, 9-1) up 40-39. The Lady Panthers turned the ball over and were forced to foul Kauffman with 25 seconds remaining.
Kauffman drained both foul shots for a 42-39 buffer. Sam Weir misfired on a 3-pointer for the Lady Panthers and Neshannock snared the rebound. The Lady Lancers’ Ericka Warvell was fouled with 7.7 seconds to go and she drained both foul shots to close the scoring.
Neshannock was 17 of 20 from the foul line compared to just 9 of 22 for Riverside. The Lady Panthers (3-1, 8-2) outrebounded the Lady Lancers, 27-20.
“Foul shooting was definitely one of the big keys for us,” Lady Lancers coach Luann Grybowski said. “They hurt us on the boards and we were in foul trouble the whole game.
“My kids played hard; it was a very physical game.”
Kauffman and Warvell netted 16 points each for the winners. Warvell added 10 rebounds. Caitlin Binder contributed six steals and three assists to go along with her six points. Ashlee Patton chipped in six rebounds.
