Bench gives Laurel girls boost
Laurel (44) Vs. Mohawk (39)
Jan 07, 2011
Laurel’s bench came through to help it win a key Section 2-AA matchup with Mohawk.
The Lady Spartans (2-2, 4-5) led, 35-26, entering the fourth quarter and held on after a late run by Mohawk (0-3, 3-8). The Lady Warriors pulled within four with a minute remaining, but Dalainey Meals hit two free throws to put the game out of reach.
With leading-scorer Becca Kerr and several others in foul trouble, freshmen Rachael Baker, Jessica Conrad and Brooke Dicks stepped up in their absence.
“I couldn’t be prouder of them,” Laurel coach Jessica Shevitz said of the freshmen. “They stepped up and played great. They were going up against seniors in a crucial part of the game and really did well.”
Kerr led the Lady Spartans with 12 points, while Wallas added 10 points and four steals. Shevitz singled out Aislinn Deinert’s effort. She grabbed a team-best eight rebounds and scored eight.
“Deinert has been really quiet, but she was huge for us tonight,” Shevitz said. “We needed someone to play big inside, and she did a great job for us. She finally came out of that shell and it was great to see.”
Mohawk’s Brooke Shasteen led all scorers with 19 points.
