Dec 13, 2010
Wilmington broke the game open by outscoring Shenango 20-10 in the second quarter in a victory in the Mohawk Tipoff Classic.
The second-quarter spree lifted the Lady Greyhounds (1-1) to a 31-20 halftime buffer.
Julie Burns led all scorers with 19 points and 17 rebounds for Wilmington and Haley Marett was next with 11 markers. Mackenzie Hiers had seven points and added six steals.
Wilmington pulled down 38 rebounds.
“It was a great defensive effort,” Lady Greyhounds coach Brandy Sanford said. “We played great defense the whole game and we did a lot of rebounding.
“Everything starts with the defense and that’s coming around. I’m really happy with how we did on the glass. It’s something we work on every day.”
Lauren Pruchnic paced the Lady Wildcats (1-1) with 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Jenna Petrucci contributed 13 markers and seven boards.
Shenango’s Amanda Herb registered eight rebounds, three steals and three blocks.
“The girls came out kind of flat,” said Shenango assistant coach Terri Lincoln, who was coaching for Brian Turk who was out of town. “We didn’t come out as aggressively as we did Friday.
“We got killed on the boards. Wilmington hit the glass pretty hard and got numerous second and third opportunities.”
