Ellwood City’s Borders has career night in win
Carlynton (80) Vs. Ellwood City (93)
Dec 10, 2010
Asia Borders was on her game last night for the Ellwood City Lincoln High girls basketball team.

Borders scored a career-high 30 points for the Lady Wolverines in a 93-80 victory over Carlynton in the South Side Beaver Tipoff Tournament.

Borders wasn’t alone in her scoring spree. Michelle Nocera provided 28 for the Lady Wolverines.

Borders and Nocera, both forwards, dominated the inside from the start, with Borders scoring 18 and Nocera 16 in the first half. Their interior presence set the tone for the rest of the game.

“We were getting second shots, we were controlling the boards, plus we were getting a lot of breakaways,” Ellwood City coach Bill Gottuso said. “It was like an old heavyweight fight. They threw the gloves off, and we threw the gloves off and we came out standing.”

The Lady Wolverines led, 51-37, at the half and their constant scoring kept the Lady Cougars from making a run. Carlynton did its share of scoring, too, with four players reaching double figures, led by Ciara Scott with 14. Much of the Lady Cougars’ offense came from Ellwood City miscues.

“We weren’t exactly a well-oiled machine,” Gottuso said. “We had 37 turnovers, so we still have a long way to go.”

Nicole Nocera added 15 points for the Lady Wolverines.
