The Mohawk High girls basketball team is heading to the postseason for a third straight year.
The Lady Warriors defeated host Shenango, 52-28, in a WPIAL Section 2-AA contest to earn one of the loop’s four playoff spots.
“That’s what we expect at this point,” Mohawk coach Mike O’Lare said. “We can climb up as far as second place. Everybody knows how important seeding is come playoff time. The higher you are, the better chance you have.”
Brooke Shasteen scored a game-high 15 points, while Kelly Fox, Amanda Shaffer and Alyssa Natale each drained nine to help the Lady Warriors (6-4 section, 14-6 overall) earn their fifth win in the last six games.
“It was a team effort,” O’Lare said. “Sometimes you don’t think about that until you look at the box score. I think that’s when we play our best. Tonight, we were very unselfish. It led to some better shots.”
Shenango (1-10, 8-12) led 16-15 at halftime but a 37-12 second-half run by Mohawk blew the game wide open.
O’Lare said the difference between the two halves was better shooting.
“They play hard,” Lady Wildcats coach Chris Vecenie said of Mohawk. “They possess the ball well and I think they have as good of a chance as anyone to go a round or two in the playoffs.”
Sophomore Angelene Rapone led Shenango with 10 points.
The Lady Warriors’ win spoiled Shenango’s Senior Night.
“I’m proud of our seniors,” Vecenie said. “They worked their butts off for me in two years.”
