The Neshannock High girls basketball team continues to roll.
The Lady Lancers moved into sole possession of second place in the WPIAL Section 2-AA standings with a 31-29 win over Riverside last night.
Neshannock (7-3 section, 12-5 overall), which has clinched a playoff spot, has won nine straight games.
“It feels great to be in this position,” said first-year Lady Lancers coach Luann Grybowski. “I couldn’t be more proud of the kids, the way they’re responding and improving each game.
“You just hope you peak at the right time and I think we’re getting better.”
Riverside tied the game at 29 with 18 seconds left. Neshannock’s Chelsea Kauffman made a pass to Ashley Patton who converted a game-winning layup with 2.4 seconds left.
“It wasn’t a pretty win, but I’ll take it,” Grybowski said. “Sometimes you get a win when you don’t play well. We played well defensively and we rebounded fairly well.”
Kauffman led the Lady Lancers with nine points, three assists and three steals. Caitlin Binder pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to go along with her two points for the winners.
Sam Weir led all scorers with 12 points for the Lady Panthers.
Neshannock was 10 of 35 from the field with 10 of the 25 misses coming on layups, according to Grybowski.
