Jared Vetica was extremely busy last night.
After leading the Ellwood City Lincoln High junior varsity team to victory, the sophomore guard started his first varsity game against Ambridge.
He netted six points — including a crucial layup down the stretch — to lead the Wolverines past the Bridgers, 46-40, in a WPIAL Section 2-AAA meeting.
“We just wanted to mix it up,” Ellwood City coach Jason Bumblis said of his starting lineup. “Vetica rose to the occasion.”
With four minutes remaining, Vetica drove to the hoop and connected on a three-point play to give the Wolverines a much-needed six-point lead.
“It was a huge turning point,” Bumblis said.
Cody Mittica led the Wolverines (2-6 section, 5-11 overall) with 14 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks. The senior is playing some of his best basketball as of late, tallying double-digit performances in four of his last five games.
“He is just playing out of his mind,” Bumblis said. “He had nine points in the first half.”
Ambridge, which defeated Ellwood City in overtime twice last season, received 18 points from Quinton Burton.
Bumblis said his team had a great week of practice leading up to its win over Ambridge (4-5, 9-7).
“It was one of the biggest wins we’ve had in a few years here,” he said. “We worked hard the past two days. We opened up the starting positions and said the hardest working guys would get them.”
