The New Castle High boys basketball team let one slip away last night.
The Red Hurricane struggled at the foul line and Ambridge took advantage for a 64-57 WPIAL Section 2-AAA overtime victory.
New Castle was just 7 of 13 from the stripe, compared to 17 of 22 for the Bridgers.
“We had our opportunities and the foul shooting really affected us a lot,” ’Canes coach Mark Stanley said. “You have to make those when you go to the line and we didn’t step up and hit them.”
New Castle (2-6 section, 3-13 overall) trailed by three with 19 seconds left in overtime and missed the front-end of a one-and-one. Ambridge secured the rebound and pulled away for the win.
The ’Canes’ Corey Eggleston buried a 3-pointer with one second left in regulation to force the extra session. The shot capped a rally that saw New Castle trail by 10 markers with just four minutes to go.
New Castle’s Marquale May paced all scorers with a career-high 31 markers, 14 of which came in the first half. Eggleston chipped in with 10.
“Marquale really played well,” Stanley said. “He was hitting his shot and playing with confidence; Ambridge had a tough time guarding him.”
Zack Wicks recorded 23 points for the Bridgers (4-3, 9-5).
The ’Canes return to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against Beaver (0-8, 2-14) in section action. It’s a must-win game for New Castle, which has just four league games left.
“We have to run the table now and we think we can do that,” Stanley said. “Beaver has some size and I’m sure they will be fired up since we beat them at their place.”
