Lady Lancers roll over Wilmington
Neshannock (52) Vs. Wilmington (37)
Jan 07, 2010
The Wilmington High girls basketball team had no answer for Chelsea Kauffman last night.

The Neshannock guard scored a game-high 25 points and collected six steals, paving the way for the Lady Lancers in a 52-37 nonleague victory over Wilmington at Westminster College.

“She was actually doing a little bit of everything,” Neshannock coach Luann Grybowski said. “She hit some big 3s off some screens. She was reading the defense really well and taking some good shots.”

The Lady Greyhounds were within striking distance at 11 points following intermission, but Kauffman, who scored 10 points in the third quarter, notched the first four baskets of the second half.

Wilmington (6-2) didn’t go down without a fight, though. The Lady ’Hounds chipped away at Neshannock’s 20-point lead but couldn’t overcome a season-high 19 turnovers.

The Lady Lancers also fared better from the field, connecting on 19 of 46 shots. Wilmington, on the other hand, made only 13 of 43.

“They came out on fire and they stayed steady the whole game,” Wilmington coach Brian Turk said. “We struggled from the get-go. We just couldn’t get over that 10-point hump.”

Neshannock, which lost four of its previous five games, received seven points and nine rebounds from Ericka Warvell. Caitlin Binder added seven assists, six rebounds and five steals for the Lady Lancers (4-5).

“We played really well early,” Grybowski said. “Then we kind of slacked off a little bit with the big lead. They made a little run. Overall, we did some good things.”

Haley Marett led Wilmington with 12 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Stephanie Kish with 11 markers and three assists.

Neshannock hopes to improve upon its 0-3 WPIAL Section 2-AA record at home against Shenango, while Wilmington faces District 10, Region 2-AA foe Greenville tonight.
