Jan 06, 2010
Long-range shooting propelled the New Castle High boys basketball team to victory last night.
The Red Hurricane rifled in nine 3-pointers to hold on for a 48-46 WPIAL Section 2-AAA verdict over Beaver.
“They played us all zone,” New Castle coach Mark Stanley said. “We had some looks and we knocked them down.”
New Castle held an eight-point lead with four minutes to play and held on. Marquale May and Brandon Domenick buried critical 3-pointers down the stretch for the winners.
The win snaps a seven-game losing streak for the ’Canes (1-2 section, 2-8 overall).
“It was a must; you feel better with it,” Stanley said of the road win. “We still have a long way to go and we have a lot of to work to do.
“It’s good to get a ‘W’ in the column, especially with Blackhawk coming up.”
May paced New Castle with 16 points, including a team-high four 3-pointers. Corey Eggleston was next with 10 markers.
Matt DiNuzzo recorded a game-high 19 points for the Bobcats (0-3, 2-8).
New Castle hosts section rival Blackhawk (2-0, 5-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The teams split last season, with the home team claiming each contest.
“Blackhawk is always solid,” Stanley said. “I’m sure they’ll be looking forward to coming in and getting us. That would be a big win to get if we could take care of our home business.”
