Wilmington (53) Vs. Shenango (50)
Dec 30, 2009
The Shenango High boys basketball team continues to learn.
However, the team is doing so the hard way.
Wilmington upended the Wildcats in overtime, 53-50, in the consolation game of the Union Holiday Classic Tournament last night.
Jake DeMedal scored six of the Greyhounds’ seven points in the extra frame to help Wilmington improve to 4-2 on the season. The senior guard netted a team-high 18 points.
“He did a good job at the end,” Shenango coach Bob McQuiston said of DeMedal. “And we had a tough time.”
Shenango (1-8) raced to a 13-9 lead after the first quarter, but found itself down by 10 at the half, following an 18-4 Wilmington run in the second frame.
The Wildcats stormed back in the second half and eventually tied the game at 46 on Joe Colavecchia’s basket with under a minute remaining. Colavecchia finished the game with 11 points.
“They made some key shots,” McQuiston said. “I think that was the difference in the game. I was happy with the fact that we didn’t quit, being down 10.”
Jeff Williams, who made just his second career varsity start last night, notched a game-high 20 points and knocked down three 3-pointers.
The sophomore has five double-digit performances on the season.
“He’s playing pretty well,” McQuiston said. “The last couple games he’s really stepped up. He was pretty good as a freshman but you never know until they get to the varsity level.”
Matt Moesta scored 15 points for Wilmington, followed by Brandon Burk with 10.
