New Castle continued its dominance with an easy win over Seneca Valley in the Gateway Tournament.
The Lady ’Canes (6-0), ranked No. 1 in the WPIAL in Class AAA by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, cruised to a 48-29 halftime and never looked back. The winners also put up 30 points in the third quarter to enforce the mercy rule.
“I’m really happy with our third quarter,” New Castle coach Jason Rankin said. “We played good defense, but we gave up some easy ones in the first half that I wasn’t happy about.
“We got some easy baskets that helped us get into our press.”
New Castle has won 14 straight regular season games dating back to last season.
Kaylynn Waters registered a game-best 22 markers, while LaShauna Brothers recorded 16 points, 11 steals and six assists for the Lady ’Canes.
“I thought LaShauna played a tremendous game,” Rankin said. “She showed great anticipation and was able to step in and make some great steals.”
JaNia McPhatter chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds for the winners, while Christina Talbert added 10 markers.
Alex Karika recorded 10 points for the Lady Raiders (0-5).
