A strong start propelled the Wilmington High girls basketball team to a victory Saturday.

The Lady Greyhounds raced to a 9-2 lead and held on for a 45-34 District 10, Region 2-AA decision over West Middlesex.

“The girls all played strong defense,” Wilmington coach Brian Turk said. “We forced a lot of turnovers and that turned into easy shots around the hoop.”

Stephanie Kish and Mackenzie Hiers netted 10 points each for the Lady Greyhounds. Hiers pulled down six rebounds.

Julie Burns snared a game-high 13 rebounds for Wilmington (1-0 region, 2-1 overall) and Haley Marett was next with nine.

Chelsea Stitt paced the Ms. Reds (0-2, 0-4) with 11 markers.
