Eggleston leads 'Canes to win
New Castle (65) Vs. Farrell (64)
Dec 14, 2009
Corey Eggleston scored 24 points to lead the Red Hurricane to the victory in the consolation game of its own tournament.
New Castle (1-1) held a 28-24 lead at halftime, but the Steelers (1-1) grabbed a 43-38 edge after three quarters. The ’Canes pulled ahead in the fourth as Jajuan Jay hit three 3-pointers in the quarter. Farrell had a chance to tie the game at the end of regulation, but a 3-point shot missed the mark and the Steelers tipped it in for two points to come up short.
Jay finished with 15 points, while Marquale May had 11. Marcus Carter added four points and eight rebounds. Eggleston made the all-tournament team.
“Any win at this point is a good one,” New Castle coach Mark Stanley said. “We’re still young and trying to get better. Section play starts this week so we’re right at it.”
New Castle hosts Hampton, coached by former Westminster College standout Joe Lafko, at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in nonconference action. The ’Canes open WPIAL Section 2-AAA action at Hopewell at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The game was originally scheduled for Friday but moved up a day by the hosts because of a school activity.
Pat Horton led Farrell with 19 points.
