Dec 11, 2009
The Laurel High boys basketball team woke up just in time last night.
The Spartans rallied from a five-point deficit in the final two minutes to top the host team, 38-36, in the Ellwood City Tipoff Tournament.
Senior Eric Wallas capped a team-high 13-point performance with an 8-foot jumper two ticks ahead of the final buzzer to win the game.
“We started out well, but then we hit a wall and looked like we hadn’t been on a basketball court for a month,” Laurel head coach Mike Tinstman said. “I thought we played well against an aggressive team, we got a lot of shots, but the shots just weren’t falling.
“We were down 36-31 with 1:58 to go and finally started to hit some, but we really struggled for about a quarter and a half.”
Jake Dando provided 11 more points for the Spartans, while Shane Caldararo contributed eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Wallas came up with six steals.
Ellwood City got 10 points from Brandon Lucarelli.
Laurel will meet Grove City at 7:30 p.m. today in the tournament championship game. Ellwood City will take on Monaca at 6 p.m. in the consolation round.
In the tournament’s junior varsity action, Laurel posted a 37-35 win over Ellwood City. Todd Fennick’s 19 points keyed the winners. Devin Seigfried had 11 for the Wolverines.
