Western Beaver (65) Vs. Union (76)
Dec 07, 2007
The Union and Shenango high school basketball teams met with success in their respective section openers last night.
The Scotties topped Western Beaver 76-65 in Section 1-A action, while the Wildcats halted Rochester 63-56 in a Section 2-AA game.
Union (2-2 overall) placed four players in double figures, led by 6-foot-6 junior center Matt Adamo with a career-high 17 points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds.
“Matt Adamo came to play today,” first-year Scotties coach Dave Smialowski said. “I’ve been on him a little bit, but he really showed up tonight.”
Union went on a 14-5 run to start the game, but the Golden Beavers crept back in until the Scotties put it away in the fourth.
“It was a good, physical game,” Smialowski said. “Their guards beat us off the dribble, and we had to make some adjustments on that.
“They were in a zone, but we made them come out and play us man.”
Anthony Thomas added 14 points for Union, while Jordan Clingensmith came in with 13 markers, and Markus Allen matched his 11 points with 11 rebounds. Jason Burkes was right behind with nine points.
“We showed some nice balance tonight,” Smialowski said. “Hopefully, we can continue that.”
Western Beaver (1-4 overall) got 16 points each from Brian Smith and Joe Paytas.
