The Wilmington High boys basketball team is one step closer to the playoffs.
The Greyhounds drilled visiting Mercer 60-40 last night in District 10, Region 2-AA action.
Wilmington is 6-2 in the region, 13-6 overall going into Tuesday’s big game with Lakeview (4-4, 10-10). Wilmington edged Lakeview 41-37 in the first meeting between the teams.
Reynolds, which already beat the ’Hounds twice, continues to lead the region at 8-0 and 19-1.
The region champion gets an automatic bid to the playoffs, while at-large berths also are awarded.
“We feel they’ll definitely take two teams from our region, so we need to keep pace,” Greyhounds coach Will Harris said. “Tuesday is big for us.”
Shane Wagner paced Wilmington with 17 points and Dallas Hartman and Ian Kelly added 10 markers apiece. Hartman also added 14 rebounds and Carson Sharbaugh had seven. Wagner came up with four steals.
The ’Hounds jumped out to a 23-13 margin after one quarter, but only led 33-23 at the half.
“We had a good offensive first quarter, but we had about a four-minute letdown in the second when we didn’t score,” Harris said. “We made some bad decisions; people were trying to not play within themselves.
“I liked the way we came out in the third quarter, though,” he added. “We really turned up the defense. They only scored five points and I was really happy with that.”
Kory Stiger led Mercer (1-6, 5-14) with 15 points.
