Feb 05, 2009
The New Castle High girls basketball team closed section play in impressive fashion last night.
Shelby Rodgers led five players in double figures with 17 points as the Lady ’Canes rolled to a 90-27 victory over Ellwood City Lincoln in a WPIAL Section 2-AAA contest.
New Castle (9-1 section, 18-2 overall), which is ranked No. 2 in the WPIAL in Class AAA by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, cruised to a 60-19 advantage at the break. The 60 points is a program record for points in a half.
“You always need a game like this,” New Castle coach Luann Grybowski said. “I let the seniors play the whole first quarter and none of them played in the fourth quarter.
“Everybody got a lot of minutes. It got sloppy at times.”
Rodgers was 8 of 9 from the floor with three steals. Kaylynn Waters was next with 15 markers on 5-of-6 shooting. She added five assists and four steals.
LaShauna Brothers, JaNia McPhatter and Alyssa Slade added 10 points each for the winners. Brothers pulled down eight rebounds and McPhatter added seven.
Jazelle Dennis handed out seven assists with three steals to go with her six markers and Ashley DeHass contributed five points and five boards.
“It’s a good game to have, it gets the kids to relax and just play,” Grybowski said.
Nicole Nocera tossed in 10 points for the Lady Wolverines (0-10, 5-17). The loss extends Ellwood City’s consecutive section losing streak to 95 straight games.
New Castle was 34 of 50 from the floor, compared to 8 of 26 for the Lady Wolverines. The Lady ’Canes forced 27 turnovers, while committing 10.
New Castle returns to action at 1 p.m. tomorrow when it travels to former section rival Butler (19-1), which is ranked No. 2 in Class AAAA.
