New Castle (48) Vs. Blackhawk (40)
Jan 29, 2009
New Castle built a 22-point third-quarter lead and held on for a Section 2-AAA win over Blackhawk.

The Lady Cougars got no closer than the final margin.

The victory also clinched no worse than a share of the section title for New Castle courtesy of Hopewell’s 44-31 verdict over Ambridge. The Lady Vikings (5-3, 14-4) and Lady Bridgers (5-3, 10-7) trail the Lady ’Canes (7-1, 16-2) by two games with a pair to play.

New Castle can sew up the section outright with a win at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Hopewell. The Lady ’Canes finish up section play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday when they host Ellwood City Lincoln (0-8, 5-14).

“We don’t talk about things like a section title; we won’t talk about it until it’s done,” New Castle coach Luann Grybowski said.

The Lady ’Canes, ranked second in the WPIAL by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, led just 22-18 at the break before outscoring Blackhawk 19-6 in the third period.

“I was pleased with the effort; we gave a great effort in the third quarter,” Grybowski said.

LaShauna Brothers notched 12 of her game-high 20 points in the third quarter for the Lady ’Canes. She also had eight rebounds.

JaNia McPhatter was next for the winners with 10 points and Shelby Rodgers contributed seven markers and eight boards. Jazelle Dennis handed out seven assists.

Alexa Hayward led Blackhawk with 16 points.

New Castle struggled at the foul line, going 7 of 17, including 4 of 12 in the final frame.

“I wasn’t happy with our foul shooting but we got out of there with the win,” Grybowski said. “The girls came through and they played through some adversity; it was a tough game.”

The Lady ’Canes shot 20 of 50 from the floor, compared to 15 of 45 for the Lady Cougars.

New Castle won the battle on the glass, 32-22, but turned it over 19 times. The Lady Cougars committed 17 turnovers.
