Laurel converted just enough fourth-quarter free throws to preserve a Section 2-AA win over New Brighton.

The Lady Spartans (1-0, 3-1) were 9 of 18 from the line for the game, including 5 of 9 in the final period.

Laurel erased a 20-17 halftime deficit by outscoring the Lady Lions 9-0 in the third period.

“I think we made some good adjustments,” Lady Spartans coach Jennifer McGarrah said. “We came out really strong in the third quarter.”

Kasie Brown led Laurel with 16 points to go along with eight rebounds. Lindsey Sauers pulled down a game-best 10 boards.

Cynderra Mobley led New Brighton (0-1, 2-2) with eight markers.
