Wilmington (41) Vs. Lakeview (37)
Jan 23, 2009
The Greyhounds stayed in the District 10, Region 2-AA race with the big win on the road.
Wilmington is now 3-1 in the region, 10-5 overall. Reynolds leads the race at 4-0, 15-1. Lakeview slipped to 2-2 and 8-8.
Shane Wagner was the lone Greyhounds player to finish in double digits with 16 points. Ian Kelly handed out four assists.
“It was a grind game,” Wilmington coach Will Harris said. “We had each other scouted out, so there weren’t a whole lot of surprises. I was proud of all my guys and how they handled it.”
Harris praised his team, from the starters to key bench players who delivered with Matt Wagner at less than full strength after a bout of the flu. In addition, freshman Anthony Derrick missed the game all together with the flu.
“Our defense starts with Shane (Wagner) and he played solid defense and didn’t gamble,” he said. “Jake (DeMedal) had two steals at the end of the game that led to two huge layups. Dallas Hartman didn’t have a big game as far as points and rebounds were concerned, but they concentrated so much on him, it really freed some of the other guys up.
“Ian Kelly had only four points, but he did a great job of penetrating their defense and kicking it, including twice to Shane for 3s. Carson Sharbaugh had all three field goals in the first quarter and really kept us in the game early. And Jibreal (Roberts) came off the bench and made some good decisions.”
