Mohawk topples Ford City
Mohawk (52) Vs. Ford City (45)
Jan 23, 2009
Mohawk avenged last season’s playoff loss to Ford City with the non-league homecourt victory.
The Warriors jumped out to a 14-7 first-quarter lead and made it stand.
“This was a game our kids were looking forward to,” Mohawk coach Kevin Wrona said. “Considering they were the ones who ended our season last year and since they brought back pretty much the nucleus of that team, we were looking forward to the opportunity.
“The other thing is they were in first place in their section, so to get the win and put that win in our win column’s a plus.”
Matt Lorello and Jake Grim led the Mohawk attack with 13 points each and Dan Mioni chipped in with 11. Lorello also had 11 rebounds.
“It was nice to see that we got scoring from a variety of people,” Wrona said. “Now we have to get better. We had the opportunity to put they away there in the fourth quarter, but we didn’t take care of the ball. And we didn’t shoot well from the line (16 of 30), either.
“We need to clean those things up as we go into the last few weeks here.”
The Warriors, leaders in WPIAL Section 2-AA at 8-0, are now 15-2 overall, while Ford City, the first-place team out of Section 1-AA, slipped to 12-6.
