Jake Dando was a hero last night for the Laurel High boys basketball team.
Dando buried an eight-footer with one second left to lead the Spartans to a 49-47 victory over Rochester in a WPIAL Section 2-AA matchup.
“I was very pleased with the effort,” Laurel coach Mike Tinstman said. “This was a great team win and we played well defensively.
“We hit some big shots and we needed this win.”
The Spartans (3-5 section, 7-8 overall), who swept the Rams (3-5, 8-7), are in a four-way tie for the final playoff spot. Shenango (3-4, 6-9) is in third place.
“This win makes the season a little more exciting,” Tinstman said. “We will focus one game at a time and see where we end up.”
Mohawk (8-0, 14-2) is in first place, followed by New Brighton (4-3, 11-4).
Mike Natale paced all scorers with 16 points for Laurel, while Dando chipped in with 10. Shane Caldararo pulled down a team-high five rebounds for the winners.
