Union (69) Vs. Monaca (61)
Jan 19, 2009
The Scotties outscored the Indians 15-7 in overtime to seal a Section 1-A win on the road.
“We stepped up and hit some big shots when we needed them,” Union coach Dave Smialowski said. “The entire second half was a nip and tuck game. We had a chance to win the game but we turned the ball over and we went to overtime.”
Union (4-2, 9-6) then shot 7 of 9 from the foul line during the extra period.
Anthony Thomas scored a game-high 26 points for the Scotties. He also added seven rebounds and eight assists.
Jason Burkes followed with 20 points and Nick DeCesare followed with 12.
“Anthony played a very solid game,” Smialowski said. “He and Burkes played well and (the Indians) were having trouble guarding them.
“This was a big win for us on the road. Winning against a big section rival also put us back in the mix because we’re looking for that section title.”
