Beth Roitz fired in 25 of her game-high 27 points in the second half to lead Ellwood City Lincoln past Shenango in a nonsection contest.

“This was an old fashion shootout,” Ellwood coach Bill Gottuso said. “There was hardly any defense.

“Beth Roitz played two different halves. She scored only two points in the first half and that was on a layup at the buzzer.”

Roitz was 0 for 11 from 3-point range in the first half but knocked down five in the second half.

The Lady Wolverines led by five after three quarters. Shenango cut the margin to three and misfired on a potential game-tying 3-pointer with a minute to play.

Ellwood City pushed the lead to five, forcing the Lady Wildcats to foul and the Lady Wolverines were able to hang on.

Michelle Nocera was next for the Lady Wolverines (5-11) with 20 points and Allison Marshall added 11.

Angelene Rapone paced the Lady Wildcats (4-13) with 22 points, while Carly Senko contributed 15. Courtney Wint followed with 14.

Jessica Kusnierz handed out nine assists for Shenango.

“Offensively, the team is coming around and progressing nicely,” Lady Wildcats coach Chris Vecenie said. “We have to learn to play both ends of the floor, though.

“Even though it’s a loss, it’s still a step forward for us. I tip my hat to Ellwood City, they played hard.”
