Mohawk (66) Vs. Riverside (58)
Jan 13, 2009
Mohawk’s defense turned up the heat in the second quarter to rally for a Section 2-AA win over Riverside.
The Warriors, trailing 24-15 after one stanza, switched to a 2-3 zone to disrupt the Panthers’ offense.
“Riverside did what they’re capable of in the first quarter; they shot the ball unbelievable,” Mohawk coach Kevin Wrona said. “The zone just seemed to take them out of their rhythm and we did a better job contesting shots.”
With the win, Mohawk got through the first half of section play with a 6-0 mark and improved to 12-2 overall.
“To get to six wins in the first half is great,” Wrona said. “We’ve got another half to go and we have to maintain our focus.”
Matt Lorello led the Warriors with 27 points, while Jake Grim and Dan Mioni added 10 markers each.
“We’ll keep riding that horse,” Wrona said of Lorello, who is the county’s leading scorer. “He’s had a great season so far and we’re looking for big things in the second half of the season from him.”
Mioni hit both of his 3-pointers in the second half as Mohawk was taking command of the game.
“Dan’s been working on it and he had the courage to step up and knock those shots down,” Wrona said.
Zac Rorick led Riverside (1-5, 5-10) with 18 points and Mason Marion was next with 17.
