Shenango falls short in OT
New Brighton (51) Vs. Shenango (49)
Jan 06, 2009
Bobby Gwin’s desperation shot at the buzzer came up short as Shenango dropped a 51-49 overtime decision at New Brighton.
Shenango (2-2 Section 2-AA, 5-6 overall) tied the game at 43 with 1.9 seconds left in regulation when Rich Gaston scored to force overtime.
After tying the score at 49 in overtime, New Brighton’s star guard B.J. Pearson hit a pair of game-deciding free throws.
“We dribbled down court and called a timeout,” Shenango coach Bob McQuiston said. “We set up a play and had Richie (Gaston) posted up, but he was double teamed.
“He kicked it out to Gwin and it came up short. I think we run that play again, Bobby makes that shot. It just didn’t fall.”
Mike Murcko paced the Wildcats with 27 points, including five 3-pointers. Gaston followed with 17.
“I thought we played hard,” McQuiston said. “We got after it and fought back. We’d get down and we’d battle back.
“We just had too many costly mistakes. We had 20 turnovers. Still, I can’t fault the effort. We just came up short.”
Pearson led the Lions (3-1, 9-2) with 11 points. Chris Weathers added 10.
