Union outscored Laurel 48-27 in the second and third quarters to pull away and knock off Laurel in the opening round of its own tournament.

“This was a well-played game,” Scotties coach Dave Smialowski said. “We shared the ball really well and it’s a nice victory.”

Matt Adamo led a balanced attack for Union (5-4) with 22 points and a game-best 11 rebounds. Anthony Thomas was next with 19 markers and five assists, while Nick DeCesare added 17 points.

Jason Burkes tossed in 13 points and Matt Ault added 11 markers and nine boards.

“Adamo played huge for us,” Smialowski said. “If he brings it like this every game we’ll be tough to beat; he played like a man.”

Jake Dando paced the Spartans (3-5) with 21 points and Tyler Forbes chipped in with 18. Eric Wallas was next with 14.

Laurel will square off with Wilmington in the consolation contest.
