Dec 29, 2008
New Castle got back on track with an easy win over Burrell in the Pine-Richland Christmas Tournament.
The Lady ’Canes (6-1), ranked fifth in the WPIAL in Class AAA by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, were coming off a 58-56 loss to Ambridge. The defeat snaps a six-game win streak for the Lady Buccaneers (6-2).
New Castle put the game away early, racing to a 17-0 lead after one quarter.
“We were a little bit sloppy,” Lady ’Canes coach Luann Grybowski said. “When you jump out like we did, that second quarter was not as good defensively as I’d like to see.
“It’s a good game to get everyone some playing time; a nice reward for the kids that work hard in practice.”
Shelby Rodgers netted a game-high 16 points with six rebounds, five steals and five assists for the Lady ’Canes. Kaylynn Waters followed with 11 markers, four assists and three steals.
“Rodgers played a well-rounded game and that’s what she needs to do,” Grybowski said.
Taylor Myers recorded 12 points for Burrell.
The Lady ’Canes were 26 of 57 from floor, compared to 10 of 32 for the Lady Buccaneers.
New Castle will battle Bishop Canevin at 6 p.m. today for the championship.
