Laurel falls to New Brighton

Third-quarter play hurt the Laurel High boys basketball team last night.

The Spartans owned a one-point advantaged at the half, but New Brighton scored 23 points to open the second half en route to taking a 67-53 WPIAL Section 2-AA victory at home.

“We lost the game in the third quarter,” Laurel coach Mike Tinstman said. “New Brighton played very well and that was the difference.”

The Spartans jumped out to a 28-27 lead at the half and then fell back 50-38 entering the fourth quarter.

New Brighton’s star guard B.J. Pearson was a difference maker as he led all scorers with 29 points and seven rebounds. He scored 12 markers in the third quarter alone.

Kane Rombold followed with 11 points for the Lions (1-1 section, 5-1 overall).

Eric Wallas paced Laurel (1-2, 3-3) with a career-high 21 points, including three 3-pointers. Wallas hit 6 of 7 attempts from the foul line.

Jake Dando also poured in three treys and finished with 15 points.
