New Castle girls edge NA
New Castle (63) Vs. North Allegheny (59)
Dec 18, 2008
New Castle shook off the effects of a long layoff to rally past North Allegheny in a nonsection encounter. The teams were section rivals before the Lady ’Canes dropped down to Class AAA this year.
It was the first game for the Lady ’Canes (5-0) since a 76-23 verdict over Farrell on Dec. 9.
New Castle committed 17 turnovers, 14 of which came in the first half.
“It was just so tough to keep the girls motivated,” New Castle coach Luann Grybowski said. “Practice gets old after a while and we tried different things.
“The layoff did hurt us sharpness-wise in the first half. We made better decisions with the ball in the second half; we didn’t force it, we just let it happen.”
LaShauna Brothers, who led the Lady ’Canes with 22 points, gave the winners the lead for good on a putback late in the third for a 47-45 advantage. New Castle trailed 43-34 early in the stanza.
Brothers also had a game-best 18 rebounds.
“This is a great win for us,” Grybowski said. “North Allegheny has always been a big rival of ours and the kids just battled hard.”
Shelby Rodgers chipped in with 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists for New Castle, while Kaylynn Waters added 10 points and five rebounds.
The Lady ’Canes were 23 of 51 from the floor, compared to 21 of 50 for the Lady Tigers.
Julie Figan led the Lady Tigers (3-3) with 19 points.
