Farrell boys beat New Castle
Farrell (52) Vs. New Castle (48)
Dec 06, 2008
The New Castle High boys basketball team picked the wrong time to go cold.

With a seven-point advantage against Farrell, the Red Hurricane went scoreless during the last two and a half minutes and lost, 52-48, in the
consolation game of the New Castle Tipoff Tournament on Saturday night.

“It was a tough atmosphere,” ’Canes coach Mark Stanley said. “We were sluggish and sloppy at times. When you get that lead you have to maintain it.

“We had several easy opportunities that we didn’t put in.”

New Castle (0-2) owned a 48-41 lead, but lost its focus following a missed layup that changed the momentum.

The ’Canes were whistled for a foul and Tyrone Steals drew a technical for slamming the ball. The Steelers (1-1) missed the front-end of a one-and-one, but capitalized on the two-shot technical and took possession of the ball as well.

“That changed the whole complexion right there,” Stanley said. “We lost our composure.

“It’s frustrating, but at the same point we have to get better.”

Steals led New Castle with 14 points and Nick Klein chipped in with 10. Rodney Parchman, who recorded nine points, made the all-tournament team.

“Section play hasn’t opened yet and we have time to prepare for (Friday’s) section opener,” Stanley said. “It doesn’t get any easier for us.”

The ’Canes open WPIAL Section 2-AAA action at 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against Hopewell. Tomorrow, New Castle travels to Hampton, which is coached by former Westminster College standout Joe Lafko.
