LaShauna Brothers gave the New Castle High girls basketball team a glimpse of what she’s capable of doing this season.

Brothers netted a career-best 21 points to lead the Lady ’Canes to a convincing 58-33 victory over Beaver Falls last night in the first round of the New Castle Tipoff Tournament.

“I thought LaShauna played phenomenal,” New Castle coach Luann Grybowski said. “She’s very athletic, and she has a nose for the ball. I was very pleased with her effort.”

New Castle will square off against Riverside, a 55-46 victor over Canon-McMillan, at 5:30 p.m. today at the Ne-Ca-Hi Field House in the championship game.

The Lady Macs will battle the Lady Tigers at 1:30 p.m. in the consolation contest.

Brothers, a 5-foot-10 sophomore forward, also collected 11 rebounds.
“I was happy with how I played,” Brothers said. “The team came together and gave a good effort. It was a good way to start.”

New Castle took command early as it built a 23-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady ’Canes pushed the advantage to 40-13 at the break.

“We started off great,” Grybowski said. “I couldn’t have been more impressed with the first half.”

Things weren’t as smooth in the second half for New Castle. Beaver Falls outscored the Lady ’Canes in the second half, 20-18, and the hosts appeared sluggish in the final 16 minutes.

“The second half left a lot to be desired,” Grybowski said. “I warned them at halftime. That’s the mentality of this program: When they get a big lead, they don’t maintain it.

“They didn’t play as hard in the second half, didn’t rebound, and they didn’t execute like they did in the first half. We’ll learn from it though.”

JaNia McPhatter chipped in a career-high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds and five steals.

“JaNia hustled, and she played great defense,” Grybowski said. “I thought JaNia did a little of everything as well.”

Shaquille Vaughn netted nine points to lead the Lady Tigers.

Both teams displayed the opening-night jitters. New Castle was 19 of 60 from the floor, compared to 10 of 30 for Beaver Falls.

The Lady ’Canes amassed 18 turnovers, compared to 27 for the Lady Tigers.
