New Castle (60) Vs. Altoona (55)
Feb 02, 2008
The New Castle High girls basketball team kept its momentum going Saturday.
Logan Hartman recorded a team-high 15 points to lead the Lady ’Canes to a 60-55 victory over Altoona in a nonsection game at the Ne-Ca-Hi Field House.
New Castle (17-4) upset Butler in a WPIAL Section 3-AAAA matchup the night before, 57-54. The loss was the only section setback for the league-champion Lady Tornado.
“Our kids playing back-to-back with a very exciting win Friday and playing that quick is a good thing for us; it was a good win for us,” Lady ’Canes coach Luann Grybowski said. “The kids played hard; I was very pleased.
“You never know how the kids will respond. You need to play those exhibition games, you can’t just play the league games.”
New Castle built a 20-point lead in the third quarter and held off a furious charge by the Lady Lions (8-14).
“We jumped out quick but we kind of died a little bit and they got a run late,” Grybowski said. “Altoona always has good fundamental teams with good defense. They’re young this year but they will be good.”
Tasia Wise followed Hartman’s effort with 14 markers.
Daril Foose netted 15 points for Altoona.
