Blackhawk beats ’Canes again
New Castle (54) Vs. Blackhawk (66)
Jan 30, 2008
The New Castle High boys basketball team has yet to find a way to beat Blackhawk.

The Red Hurricane lost a 66-54 WPIAL nonsection contest on the road last night against the Cougars. It was the third loss New Castle suffered against Blackhawk this season.

“Antoine Childs was too much to handle,” ’Canes’ first-year coach Mark Stanley said.

Childs, a Division I New Jersey Institute of Technology recruit, scored a game-high 24 points for Blackhawk. Brooks Roorback followed with 16 points.

The Cougars (18-5 overall) took a 31-27 lead at the half and outscored New Castle 23-16 in the third quarter.

“We hung in there,” Stanley said. “We got into trouble in the third quarter and they went up by as many as 13 and put us out of reach.”

Tyrone Steals paced the ’Canes (7-14) with 20 points. Nick Klein followed with 10.

Nick Colella led the rebounding effort with a team-high 11 boards to go with his eight points.

Blackhawk, ranked fifth in Class AAA by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, competes in Section 2-AAA and will move into Section 3-AAA with New Castle next season.

The ’Canes have lost their last five games.
