The Wilmington High boys basketball team was fishing for an upset last night, but Sharon wriggled off the hook.

Sam Schweiss hit a jumper with six seconds remaining and the Tigers walked away with a 58-56 District 10, Region 1-AA victory after Shane Wagner’s last-gasp 3-point attempt missed.

“It was a good look (for Wagner),” Wilmington coach Will Harris said. “I felt there was contact, but there was no call.”

Wagner turned in another superb effort for the ’Hounds (7-6 district, 10-11 overall). The junior guard made seven 3-pointers en route to scoring a game-high 23 points.

“He had a great game,” Harris said. “That missed shot is not what lost the game. The third quarter hurt us the most.”
Wilmington led 31-28 at the half, but was outscored 17-9 in the third period.

“We weret down by 10 at one point and fought back to take the lead with a minute and a half to go in the game,” Harris said.

Wilmington was 10 of 16 from the foul line, including 5 of 8 in the fourth quarter. Sharon netted 7 of 12, including 4 of 4 in the final period.

D’Andre Johnson led the Tigers (11-2, 16-5) with 18 points. Schweiss followed with 13 and Louis Brown added 11.

Wilmington has three more games remaining, including a key matchup against Greenville on Friday.

“We have to take care of the last three,” Harris said. “Our season right now is one game at a time, but we have to win all three.”
