Trailing 29-27 at the half, the Spartans took control with 17-8 run in the third quarter and held on for their first WPIAL Section 2-AA win.

“We finally made some shots when we had to and we got rebounds when we needed them,” Laurel coach Mike Tinstman said.

Jake Dando led all scorers with 19 points for the Spartans (1-10, 2-18). Dane Naughton followed with 13 and Eric Wallas chipped in with 10.

Dando and Naughton each grabbed six rebounds. Wallas had five assists.

“It’s been a little frustrating because our record hasn’t indicated how well we’ve improved,” Tinstman said. “This was a nice win and hopefully it’s a step in the right direction.”

E.J. Blackwell led Rochester (2-10, 5-14) with 14 points and Terry Gettings followed with 12.
