The Wilmington High boys basketball team had heard enough about Greenville's winning streak.
After 28 consecutive regular season wins for the Trojans, the Greyhounds put an end to it. Wilmington knocked off host Greenville, 49-40, in a District 10, Region 2-2A matchup behind a strong defensive effort. The Trojans are a 3A school competing in the lower division.
"It was a complete team effort, we got production from everyone involved and shot the ball very well," Wilmington coach Mike Jeckavitch said. "Something we worked on this week was a triangle-and-two on (Joe) Batt and (Mike) Blaney, and it really kind of took them out of sync a bit, we did a phenomenal job and contested everything."
Robert Pontius turned in 18 points to lead the way for Wilmington (10-3, 14-7), while Spencer DeMedal notched a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds.
The triangle-and-two defense proved effective, as Batt led Greenville (12-1, 20-1) with 18 points. Blaney was held to just five.
"Early in the season we had a lot of football guys who weren't quite basketball ready," Jeckavitch said of his team. "But now we've won 12 of 14 and definitely feel like we're peaking at the right time. It may not be pretty but we battle and we get the job done."
