Section champion Neshannock knocks off Riverside
Neshannock (46) Vs. Riverside (33)
Feb 06, 2017
The Neshannock High girls basketball team is building momentum before its playoff run begins.

The Lady Lancers, who clinched their fourth WPIAL section title in a row last week, stopped Riverside 46-33 in a Section 3-2A battle on the road Monday night.

Neshannock is now 11-0 in the section, 19-1 overall, and will close league play Thursday at home against Laurel. The Lady Spartans are battling Beaver Falls for the fourth and final playoff spot from the section.

Riverside, which is in third place in the league behind second-place Mohawk, is 7-4 and 14-5.

Carmie Matarazzo led Neshannock with 16 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Aidan Noga added eight assists and four steals and Hannah Haswell six rebounds and four steals.

Sydney Wolf paced Riverside in scoring with 12.

The Lady Lancers led 18-3 after one quarter and 26-19 at the half. The Lady Panthers had just one field goal in the first half, but took advantage of 18 fouls called on Neshannock to connect on 15 of 19 free throws. Haswell, Bella Burrelli and Regan Moorhouse spent much of the first half on the bench.

"One of our goals was to win the section again and we did that. Now we just want to close out strong," Lady Lancers coach Luann Grybowski said. "I can't say enough about these kids. They just play so well as a team. I know I sound like a broken record, but they really don't care who scores. Of our top eight, everybody has been in double figures."

"I say over and over again that defense wins championships, but when you have more than four kids capable of scoring for you, it makes you very hard to guard," she added. "And that is definitely an advantage for us."
