Spartans hold off Shenango in upset bid

The Laurel and Shenango high boys basketball teams are on opposite ends of the WPIAL Section 3-2A standings, but that didn’t matter Tuesday night.

The Spartans were forced to hold on against visiting Shenango.

The Spartans are now 4-1 in the section and 10-1 overall. The Wildcats are 1-4 and 3-9.

Mason Mraz paced Laurel with 25 points, including four 3-pointers, and 15 rebounds. Jordan Dantico chipped in with 18 points and eight rebounds. Coltin Esposito tacked on 11 points.

Brandon Bennett led Shenango with 24 points and Maxwell Reamer added 19, including five 3-pointers. The game was tied 17-17 after one quarter. At halftime, the Wildcats led, 31-28. But the Spartans opened up a lead in the third period and held on.
