Laurel High boys basketball standout Mason Mraz came through in the clutch Tuesday night.
Twice.
Mraz made a field goal at the end of regulation to force overtime and then drained two foul shots in the extra session to propel the Spartans to an 85-83 WPIAL Section 3-2A home win over Sewickley Academy.
“It was a great high school basketball game,” Laurel coach Ken Locke said. “I thought it was a superb effort by our guys. The intensity and pure effort that they put forth was great; I couldn’t be happier.”
The Spartans (3-0 section, 9-0 overall) trailed 72-70 with just four-tenths of a second left in regulation. Locke drew up a play in a timeout for the squad.
Laurel’s Coltin Esposito threw a pass in to Mraz at the rim. Mraz tipped the pass in at the horn to force overtime.
“That’s something we work on all the time,” Locke said. “That’s why Mason is one of the best players in the WPIAL.”
Mraz then broke an 83-all tie by sinking two free throws with 5.6 seconds to go. The Panthers (2-1, 5-2) misfired on the last shot and the Spartans survived.
“With this section, I think it’s the best in 2A,” Locke said. “We have to protect our home court and that’s what we did.”
Mraz paced Laurel with 31 points and added 11 rebounds. Esposito collected 21 markers and Jordan Dantico delivered 13 tallies.
Zack Sickafuse snared a team-best 14 rebounds for the victors.
Chris Groetsch tossed in a game-high 35 markers for Sewickley Academy.
