BEAVER FALLS — The Neshannock High girls basketball team erased the deficit, but couldn't hang onto the lead.

The Lady Lancers' second-half rally fell short Friday night in a 42-36 loss to Bishop Canevin in a WPIAL Class AA quarterfinal at Geneva College's Metheny Field House.

"It just hurts to be so close and be within striking distance and not get it," Neshannock coach Luann Grybowski said.

The Lady Crusaders (20-4) move on to face Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (21-3), a 48-38 winner over Chartiers-Houston, in Tuesday's semifinals.

"It's survive and advance when it comes to playoffs, that's what we try to do," Bishop Canevin coach Tim Joyce said.

Neshannock (19-4), which meets Chartiers-Houston (17-7) on Monday in a PIAA play-in game, faced a 9-8 deficit after the first quarter. The Lady Lancers struggled early in the second and the Lady Crusaders started to pull away with a 20-10 lead with 5:01 left in the half. Neshannock cut the deficit to four points, but went into halftime down 25-18.

"Even when we got that lead early, we knew Neshannock would come back," Joyce said. "Luann is too good of a coach and I have so much respect for her and her kids — we've played them enough in the playoffs before — that we knew this was going to be a battle to the end."

He was right. The Lady Lancers scored the first eight points of the second half. They posted a 34-33 lead right before the end of the third on Aidan Noga's jumper.

"They played so hard in the second half and came back from a deficit and did some really good things," Grybowski said. "Then, they did some really uncharacteristic things."

Neshannock struggled to generate much offense in the fourth. Bishop Canevin held the Lady Lancers scoreless for the first 4:46 before Ally Zarilla swished a pair of free throws to tie the game at 36-all.

However, those were the team's only points in the final quarter as turnovers cost it offensive chances. Down 38-36, Neshannock had a chance to tie, but a shot rimmed out with 22.4 seconds to go. The Lady Crusaders added a bucket and two throws in the final 16.6 seconds to seal the win.

"We had at least 20 turnovers. That takes away a lot of possessions. When you take away possessions, you can't score," Grybowski said. "I told the kids that if we kept them to 40 or less, we had a shot to win. If we run a little bit better stuff at the end, it could have been a different outcome."

Brionna Allen paced Bishop Canevin with 14 points. Noga led Neshannock with 12. Carmie Matarazzo had eight points and eight rebounds. Bella Burrelli finished with six points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
