Wilmington girls basketball team falls to Mercer
Wilmington (38) Vs. Mercer (48)
Jan 07, 2016
The free-throw line was no friend to the Wilmington High girls basketball team Thursday night.
The Lady Greyhounds outscored Mercer from the field, but fell victim to a major free-throw shooting deficiency in the 48-38 District 10, Region 2-AA road loss.
Wilmington connected on 13 field goals (including five 3-pointers) and was 6 of 10 from the charity stripe. The Lady Mustangs finished with 11 field goals (one 3-pointer) and were 24 of 30 from free-throw land. The Lady Greyhounds committed 23 fouls to Mercer's 12.
"It was a tough loss," Wilmington coach Matt Fabian said. "We played very aggressively. I think the officials could have let some of the calls go, because the game gets slowed down and turns into a free throw-shooting competition. I agreed with some of the fouls, but I like to see them be allowed to play.
"But that's how they call them now with the new hand-check rule," he added. "We have to do better with our feet and getting in position."
Lexi Brumbaugh and LingEr Williams led the Lady Greyhounds (1-2 region, 3-9 overall) with nine points apiece.
