The Wilmington High boys basketball team saw its District 10 playoff hopes dashed last night.
The Greyhounds dropped a 44-41 District 10, Region 2-AA decision at Reynolds.
The ’Hounds fell to 4-7 in the region, 6-15 overall. The Raiders, in second place in the region behind West Middlesex, are 8-3, 11-10.
“If we had won this and won Friday night (at Sharpsville), we might have gotten in,” Wilmington coach Mike Jeckavitch said. “But I think this loss pretty much puts us out.”
Wilmington trailed 15-6 after the first quarter, but rallied to go ahead 21-20 at the half. The Greyhounds, though, were outscored 15-7 in the third quarter and just fell short of a second comeback in the fourth quarter.
“We fell behind early, but we amped up our defensive pressure in the second quarter and got a lot of steals and transition layups,” Jeckavitch said. “We had another lull in the third quarter and were down by eight at one point in the fourth. We came back and we were only down 42-41 with 20 seconds to go and had the ball. But we turned it over twice in the last 20 seconds, including once with two seconds left. We never got a shot off that could have won the game.”
Travis Brumbaugh led Wilmington with 15 points and three steals, while Spencer DeMedal had five assists.
