Mohawk grabs share of section lead by beating Rive
Riverside (49) Vs. Mohawk (56)
Jan 31, 2015
The Lady Warriors moved into a tie for first place with Neshannock in WPIAL Section 1-AA with the 56-49 road win.
Mohawk is 8-2, 14-4 after knocking the Lady Panthers (8-3, 16-3) out of a tie for first.
The Lady Warriors had to work for the win. All five starters ended the game with four fouls. Riverside’s inability to make its free throws (the Lady Panthers were just 13 of 29 from the charity stripe) proved to be a big difference.
“We got into major foul trouble not far into the game,” Mohawk coach Mike O’Lare said. “For the most part, I left my starters in and we just played through it. Somehow no one fouled out. We were probably lucky time ran out when it did.”
“This was a big one for us,” he added. “To win on the road and move into a tie for first is pretty big. At least our destiny is in our own hands now and not in someone else’s. Of course, we’d love to at least share the section title, but we’re taking it one game at a time.”
The Lady Warriors close out the regular season at home with New Brighton and travel to Shenango on Thursday before traveling to Beaver in nonsection action Feb. 9.
Samantha Carr paced Mohawk with 17 points, while Aliya Gage added 15 and Erin Giancola 11.
