Jan 28, 2015
The Union High boys basketball team went to work last night.
It was enough to secure a 63-58 win over Section 1-A opponent Eden Christian Academy and a WPIAL Class A playoff berth.
The Scotties scored 29 points in the final quarter to take the victory.
Union (7-3 section, 10-8 overall) started out slow, only scoring two points in the opening quarter, but turned it on in the final eight minutes of the game.
“We just started getting steals, got a lot of breakaways,” Union coach Mark Stanley said. “The pressure got to them. Early on, Garrison Bell kept us in it, third quarter Anthony Rush hits three 3s. He held us close there. It went back and forth and we made the surge in the fourth.”
Bell finished the game with a team-high 19 points and nine boards. Cornell Charles totaled 15 points and Rush contributed 14.
“They stepped up in the pressure,” Stanley said. “If those guys don’t do what they did, we don’t win.”
Union clinched a spot in the WPIAL Class A playoffs with the victory. The Scotties currently are in second place in Section 1-A, the highest they can finish, with Sewickley Academy undefeated in the top spot
