Wilmington turned back by West Middlesex
West Middlesex (37) Vs. Wilmington (35)
Jan 24, 2015
The Lady ’Hounds held a lead in the fourth quarter for the second time in as many games.

It was also the second time that the lead didn’t last through the final buzzer, this time against District 10, Region 2-AA opponent West Middlesex, 37-35.

Four days after dropping a 58-56 overtime decision to Sharon, Wilmington (1-6, 5-12) had to relive its late-game nightmare once again.

“It’s like the movie Groundhog Day,” Wilmington coach Matt Fabian said. “That’s how the last two games have gone. We had a seven-point lead with four minutes to go. It was erased in a minute. Credit to Gretchen Elsie, she scored at least five of those seven. They did a full-court press, we got caught in traps and turn it over.”

LingEr Williams led Wilmington with nine points.

Being on the brink of a victory and having it snatched away has been a painful learning process for the Lady ’Hounds.

“It’s tough, these last two games we’ve been the better team by far in the last 28, 29 minutes,” Fabian said. “Not the last three. We realize what needs to be done, now we need to do it.

“Just one of those hard-fought battles. I think we had at least two front end one-and-ones we missed. Between missing the front end, giving them the ball back, it turned into an avalanche we couldn’t stop. It hurts, we’re disappointed. They played hard for 29 minutes and not coming away with the win. It’s frustrating on both ends but this is how we learn and get better.”
