Mercer girls edge Wilmington
Mercer (36) Vs. Wilmington (29)
Jan 12, 2015
A hot start wasn’t enough for the host Lady ’Hounds in their District 10, Region 2-AA loss to Mercer.
Wilmington (1-2, 5-7) scored the game’s first 12 points and entered the second quarter with a 12-5 advantage.
Things fell apart quickly after that, as the Lady M’s (1-3, 3-9) used a 14-4 second quarter to take control.
“The first four minutes were perfect,” Wilmington coach Matt Fabian said. “You realize, basketball is a game of runs and we didn’t weather that and they did. Hand it to Mercer, they played well defensively the rest of the way. We played very passive in those 3 1/2 quarters. We didn’t look like ourselves.”
The Lady Greyhounds turned the ball over 17 times in the loss, something that Fabian hopes his girls can do a better job of moving forward.
“That’s way too many turnovers,” Fabian said. “We have to be able to be right around 10 or 12 a game. When we’re turning it over, it’s unforced errors. We have to do a better job of taking care of the ball.”
Hannah Drake delivered 10 markers to lead the Lady Greyhounds. Lauren Frederick was next with six.
Adelyn Cook and Haylie Glass garnered game-high honors with 12 points each for Mercer.
